“It’s a great honour to be a part of this historic group. I was awarded the honour due to being sponsored as a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers."
Carrie de Silva, principal lecturer in law and taxation at Harper Adams University, has recently been awarded the Freedom of the City of London during a short ceremony at the Guildhall.
“It’s a great honour to be a part of this historic group. I was awarded the honour due to being sponsored as a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers.
“I had to read out a promise to the monarch and the City, and then sign a large leather-bound book of record.
“As part of the event I was shown around the small museum of City Freedom artefacts and documents in the Guildhall, including a 15th Century scrap parchment being part of the oldest known Freedom certificate.
“There was also the ornate box in which Florence Nightingale’s certificate was presented, Lord Nelson’s very large and impressive certificate and Ken Dodd’s tickling stick which he gave to the chamberlain as a memento after his admission as a Freeman!”
Carrie will be proceeding to the full liveryman status of the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisors within the next year. She added: “This is a ceremonial matter but marks one as a full member of the livery company.
“I hope to take part in the ceremonial sheep drive across London Bridge in September.”
